The APA has a spotless reputation. This is because we do what is right every
time. We pass up on huge advertising dollars because we can't afford to be
influenced, we do not approve businesses or products that are questionable, we
establish policies that are fair and in the best interest of our companion
animals; But
we are not elitist. The APA is fair, committed and honest, because you count on us to
be and we owe it to our companion friends.

The only
Product Approval
that not only conducts extensive real world testing, but ongoing testing
and consumer feedback as well.
If you are interested in having your product
approved there are three steps to the program.
- Initial Review
- Product Testing
- Approval Report
Initial Review
The APA has a pre-determination process to decide if a product
meets testing guidelines. For example, we are currently not testing foods or
chemicals. Each product must be individually evaluated (if your product is a new
type of collar for pets, the collar must be separately evaluated for each type
of pet).
The fee for product evaluation varies depending on the
product. In most cases the fee is less than five hundred dollars. The fee will
be determined after the initial review. You should be prepared to provide enough
product for proper evaluation. Fill out the following form to have your product
evaluated for consideration.
Begin the Application Process
Product
Testing
Products are tested in their actual intended use environment.
When possible, shadow testing will be done in harsh environments. If a products
longevity is in question the approval may be delayed or issued on a contingency
basis. These possibilities will be discussed prior to testing.
Upon approval, the APA Approved logo and permission for its
use will be issued. The APA will field feedback for the product and forward
consumer feedback to the company.
While we do not strive to be not "big brother",
serious complaints will be investigated and approved status can be
revoked if warranted. Our approval process is so thorough, this has not
yet happened.
Approval Report
A report is issued as to the results of testing in most
circumstances. If a product has been approved, camera ready approved logo
artwork is issued along with guidelines for its use and the product may be
featured at our web site. If a product does not pass and the required
improvements are made, it may enter the approval process a second time.

APA Approval
Only the ethical need apply!
Product Testing
All products are physically tested by the APA or in the case of large numbers
of similar products (ie. leashes of different colors), some are tested and
others are inspected.
Ongoing Testing
Test products remain in use until the end of their useable life. Each year
additional products can be requested if there has been a design change,
different materials are used, or if the testers feel additional testing is
required.
Consumer Feedback
Testing a few products gives us great information about the product, its
usefulness, safety and value to pet owners. But the feedback from
thousands of pet owners is priceless.
Company Background and ethical business practices
Have you ever had a company say they will call you back and do not, offer a
refund that never arrives, treat you rudely or offer a product that isn't quite
what they say?
Those are not APA Approved businesses!
